CHiPS (CHatter-free Hi-Performance Speeds) A commercial
service offered by
MLI.
Although most high-speed precision machine and tool structures are designed to utilize
their horsepower and speed, the dynamics of the spindle-holder-tool system prevents
machining at relatively high metal removal rates (MRR) and horsepower. Due to the
necessary limited stiffness of high-speed holder-tool systems caused by small diameter and
long tooling, and small bearing and spindle shaft diameters, "chatter"
vibrations can occur at very modest depths-of cut. With an ability to reliably and
accurately predict and measure the performance of the spindle-holder-tool system, it is
possible to make maximum use of the machine's speed and feed capabilities.

Through measurement of the dynamics at
the tool-tip and specially designed cutting test, the optimal speeds and feeds, and limit
axial and radial depths of cut for each tool can be quickly and accurately
determined.

Parameters are optimized for maximum production (horsepower) with
the desired accuracy. This proactive approach, using MLI's proprietary software and
techniques, supplies the customer with the data needed to intelligently generate NC code
to take full advantage of the benefits of high speed milling while expanding the universe
of useful cutting tools. Parts can be produced with the minimum of part try-outs and
program modifications. Additionally, bench work can be virtually eliminated, all
while minimizing machining times.
The CHiPS approach has been perfected
over the past 20 years and has been taught to over 1000 people from over
100
companies. Those companies which have implemented the CHiPS approach
derived significant benefits. Companies affiliated with the aerospace industry have
seen especially dramatic results (see Figure 1).
